Despite its unwieldy title, the “winter hike with wild, romantic views and mulled wine cooking under rock roofs” is the most popular winter tour through the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz. I wanted to find out why – and I just joined one.
“Great light,” says the young woman next to me. Red outdoor jacket, rucksack, cap. She noticed that I was trying to capture exactly this magical lighting mood with the camera. “Oh, yeah, gorgeous,” is not my very original answer. After that, we’ll be silent again. We are the only ones on this cool December morning at the landing stage of the ferry below the national park railway station Bad Schandau.
It’s a film-like appearance that the spa is making today. The winter sun is still low. The river and its banks lie in the shade, while the church tower and some of the houses already shine in the sunlight.

With the ferry to the hiking paradise
The ferry brings us right into this scenery. Below the stately façade of the Hotel Elbresidenz we disembark. My destination is the Aktivzentrum Bad Schandau. Here I want to join the guided national park tour “Winter hike with wild romantic views and mulled wine cooking under rock roofs”. It is the public favourite of all winter hiking offers in Bad Schandau and I would like to know why. In winter the tour starts every Saturday, 10 am, as soon as there are at least four interested people.
If you don’t have a backpack or hiking boots, you can borrow them.
