Saxon Switzerland is worth a visit at any time of the year – even in winter. In the cold months, the region is an insider’s tip, a refuge for romantics, connoisseurs and city fugitives. The rock world shows itself from its wild and unfathomable side. When snow falls, magical scenes are created that remain in the mind for a lifetime. Winter hiking is a wonderful way to admire the sleeping beauty of nature.

Even when nature is at rest, life goes on. In the most beautiful places of the region, hibernation is out of the question. The people wander and feast, take photographs and saunas according to their mood – there are no limits to the manifold possibilities. The selection is so varied that you can also spend a whole week here. But anyone who doesn’t have the time should know: even a short trip to the Elbsandsteingebrige is absolutely worthwhile! We have tried it out for you and have revealed how you can experience a lot in the region in a very short time. We have the perfect timetable for you here:

Friday – Cultural & culinary highlights

Friday, 14:00 h Pirna

Experience sandstone full of life

On your way to Saxon Switzerland you must not drive past Pirna under any circumstances. Because Pirna is a pearl. Its romantic old town with its magnificent town houses, narrow alleys and cosy courtyards is one of the most beautiful city centres in Saxony. A stroll through Pirna’s alleys is absolutely recommendable. The original preserved town centre with the town hall rich in Gothic portals, the Sonnenstein fortress, the town church of St. Mary and the Canaletto house tell the story of the over 780 year old town. Here you will find small cafés, affectionate shops and restaurants with special charm.

Tips: City museum Pirna, Richard Wagner sites Graupa, Krietzschwitzer candle rooms, coffee roasting Schmole, Geibelbad Pirna, Tom Pauls theatre, gallery workshop Matter of view

After the varied cultural programme in Pirna, the tour continues into the rocky realm of Saxon Switzerland – to the Bastei Bridge.

Friday, 17:00 h Basteiglühen

Enjoy grandiose views of the surrounding rocky kingdom at the Bastei

The views from the Bastei are deserted, the fog waves mystically through the Elbe valley and nature quietly sings its song. This is a time of peace and tranquillity not to be outbid. Enjoy a hot punch on the firebowl and even the other side of the bastion.

After these fantastic views it’s time for culinary highlights – preferably in the winter fairytale spa town of Rathen. So let’s go to Rathen – you could already catch a glimpse of the health resort from the Bastei bridge.
